Compare Nursing Homes Side by Side
How Do You Compare Nursing Homes?
Search for up to three of the 14,690 CMS-certified nursing homes by name or city, then see their star ratings, nursing hours, staff turnover, inspection results, fines and dementia-care measures in one table, next to the national medians. It runs in your browser and sends nothing.
Pick up to three nursing homes.
How the Comparison Works
Every value comes from CMS Care Compare, data from August 2026. The national median column shows the middle value across all certified nursing homes: 3.7 hours of nursing per resident per day, 45% nursing staff turnover and 13% of long-stay residents receiving an antipsychotic. Lower is better for turnover, deficiencies, fines, antipsychotic use and falls. Read how CMS star ratings work, why staffing matters and how to choose a nursing home, or search near you with the nursing home finder.
This tool restates official rules and published figures, checked October 2026. It isn't medical, legal or financial advice and doesn't decide eligibility; your state Medicaid agency, Medicare and your doctor do.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Should You Compare First?
Start with CMS's health inspection rating and the inspection details, then staffing: nursing hours per resident and how often nurses leave. For a person with dementia, also compare how often long-stay residents receive antipsychotic medication.
Are the Star Ratings Enough to Choose a Home?
No. CMS says the ratings are a starting point. Visit, read the full inspection reports on Care Compare and talk with residents, families and staff before you decide.
Why Do Inspection Ratings Differ by State?
CMS rates health inspections against the other homes in the same state, so a 3-star inspection rating means about average for that state.
Where Do These Numbers Come From?
CMS Care Compare's Provider Information and MDS Quality Measures files, data from August 2026. Staffing comes from payroll records homes submit to CMS.
